How Did the Growth Summit Go?
The Growth Summit, organized by WeCan Africa Development and The Business Clinic, aimed to bring together higher education students to discuss their concerns about skills development, employment challenges, and career growth. It provided a platform for students to engage directly with industry experts and employers, gaining insights into the evolving job market and strategies to secure dignified employment despite limited job opportunities. Additionally, the summit explored ways for aspiring and existing student entrepreneurs to start and sustain their businesses.
Bringing both experts and students into one room was a deliberate effort to facilitate professional networking—an element often missing in higher education. This network enables students to connect with employers, industry leaders, and mentors, ask questions, and stay informed about industry trends and opportunities. Today, employment goes beyond just having competitive skills—it’s also about who can recommend you, share information, and guide you on your career journey.
The summit was interactive and engaging, with participants comprising:
– 67.3% students (over 150 students)
– 5.9% career professionals
– 26.8% business owners & leaders
– 20+ student volunteers
For some students, the summit connected them to mentors in their field. For others, it provided new contacts and industry insights to navigate their career paths. The connections built during the summit is expected to play a crucial role in creating strong, supportive communities that empower young people in their employment journey and career development.
A huge thank you to all our speakers, partners, students, and volunteers—and to YOU for reading this post!
At WeCan Africa, our goal is to be the first organization that comes to mind when students seek genuine support for their career development.
